Vegan Food Review: The Impossible Burger

Details: Had the Impossible Burger at the Bareburger at 366 W 46th St, New York, NY 10036. Official site is https://www.impossiblefoods.com/burger/

There’s been a lot of hype for the Impossible Burger. Is it worth the hype? Sort of.

Last week I went with some vegans to Bareburger where they all promptly ordered the Impossible Burger. If you’ve never heard of it, the Impossible Burger is supposedly a vegan burger that tastes just like meat. According to the website, it’s largely due to the discovery of heme, a substance present in plants and to a greater degree animals. By adding heme to vegetable products, you can make a patty that tastes, sizzles, and chars the same way meat does. Out of mostly curiosity, I decided to try it out.

They sell the Impossible Burger at a lot of trendy places, but the one I had was from Bareburger. The premade burger cost around fourteen dollars and came with other burger toppings on it. I forget what exactly, but there was lettuce and a flavored, maybe curry ketchup I think.

The burger was fine. If I were to compare it to other burgers, I would say it’s better than a McDonald’s burger, perhaps equal to a Wendy’s burger, and nowhere near as good as a Shake Shack burger. So it’s all right.

Does it really taste like meat though? Hard to say. The thing is, I eat McDonald’s burgers fairly regularly and that thing may as well be made out of tofu. I wouldn’t know because it just taste low quality, and yet the McDonald’s burgers are supposed to be 100% beef. So if you were to ask me if I can tell the difference between the Impossible Burger and a burger that’s supposed to be meat, the answer is I don’t know. I can’t tell if the burger that’s supposed to have meat in it has meat in it. At best, the Impossible Burger can certainly pass test with other low quality burgers. However, it cannot compare to a higher quality burger with actual meat in it.

In conclusion, the Impossible Burger is fine. It is at best, a mid to low end burger. The only thing that makes it suck is that a burger from McDonald’s costs about a dollar and the price of the Impossible Burger at most places usually costs over ten dollars.

Score: 5.5/10
