Restaurant Review: Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan

Details: Located at 42-47 Main St, Queens, NY 11355. Official site is http://hunankitchenny.com/

Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan is a Sichuan restaurant that mostly caters to family style eating. That means communal dishes to share. They don’t really cater to individuals buying separate things. Accordingly, the menu is kind of expensive considering the type of food they’re serving.

The space isn’t large, but pretty standard for your low key, authentic Chinese restaurants. We ordered the scallion pancake (about $6), the spicy cold noodles (about $7), the dan dan noodles (about $7), and the dry hot pot with three sauces with seafood (cost about $35).

Everything was okay. The hot pot was good though. It’s not the kind with soup. It’s the dry kind where they stir fry everything together. The shrimp in it was really good. It was fried to the point where you could comfortably chew through the shell.

The service wasn’t too great.

Overall, it was okay. Sichuan isn’t my favorite kind of food. Also worth mentioning is that my specific experience here wasn’t great. There were some really loud Chinese people giving a lot of shit to the waitress who was doing here best to remain courteous. Keep in mind that the majority of people here are Chinese immigrants who don’t speak English too well. This isn’t a westernized restaurant and the majority of people who frequent this place aren’t going to be westernized either.
