Warby Parker is an eyeglasses and sunglasses retailer with a number of locations around Manhattan with more locations coming in the future.
First, Warby Parker’s prices. A pair of eyeglasses starts at $95.00. If your prescription is higher, then you can opt for thinner lenses which will cost you a total of $135.00 for a pair of those (I purchased the thinner lenses). An eye exam is a little over $80.00 (I got an eye exam somewhere else for $25.00 and brought my prescription to Warby Parker, they measured my pupil distance there). It’s a great deal and the cost of a pair of frames is a fraction of what I’ve paid for glasses in the past.
Secondly, Warby Parker has a great program where you can pick five frames from the Warby Parker website and Warby Parker will mail them to you to try on for five days FOR FREE. After those five days, you have to send them back in the same box. Some of my friends have tried it over and over again, mailing frames back and forth five or six times. I tried it once. It was very convenient. I think this service is meant more for those who want to buy frames online.
But none of that matters if the frames look nasty. Thankfully, they are very stylish in my opinion. When I started thinking about buying new frames, I decided that i wanted larger, dark colored, non-metallic frames. Warby Parker’s style is exactly that. They have a wide selection of frames, but in truth, their core style is pretty much the same. It’s a hipster style, which is mostly large, acetate frames. They have metal and clear frames, but I think the thicker acetate frames look great.
After you purchase a pair of frames, you can go back anytime you want and they will adjust it for you. I’ve already been back a few times.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. Definitely more so than your average eyeglasses retailer.
Additionally, all glasses come with a one year warranty and are given the anti-sun coating.
Score: 8.8/10 Best experience I ever had buying glasses. I read somewhere that the price of most eyeglasses largely consists of the markup; most retailers over inflate the price to try to get more money out of you. Further, there is some sort of agreement to keep glasses above a certain price (not sure if this is true). It has nothing to do with the cost of the frames or lenses. That Warby Parker would undercut the average price of glasses has placed this business above all it’s competitors (The average range of frames I’ve found is around $200 to $600, Sometimes even more. And that’s not counting the extra cost of anti-sun coating, thinner lenses, etc.). As far as I’m concerned, Warby Parker has earned my loyalty and will be the only place I ever buy glasses from. At least if they keep their prices the same.
