Movie Review: Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Details: Released in 2017. Under two hours and a half long. Stars Taron EgertonColin FirthMark Strong. Directed by Matthew Vaughn. Rated R.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is the sequel to the action packed, often ridiculous Kingsman: The Secret Service. The prior film was a movie that wanted to modernize and give a more comedic, R rated take on the spy genre that movies like the James Bond franchise familiarized to audiences. The Golden Circle continues what the first film started by adding more action, more well-known names to the cast, and more jokes. If you like the first Kingsman movie, you will enjoy this. Minor spoilers ahead, but nothing that wasn’t in the trailer above or on a promotional movie poster.

Movie Review: 22 Jump Street

Details: Released in 2014. Under two hours long. Stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.

If you enjoyed 21 Jump Street (the movie), then you will enjoy this. It’s more of the same.

Instead of infiltrating high school, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum must now infiltrate college and tackle all the college film clichés they find.

As with 21 Jump Street, there were just as many jokes that fell flat as there were jokes that worked. With that said, there were many scenes that made me laugh out loud. It’s a mixed bag of good and bad comedy. Expect to find the same overly silly, self-aware, meta humor that you saw in 21 Jump Street.

Tatum and Hill are, again, great together and continue with their great comedic chemistry in this film. The two are not afraid to be completely fucking stupid on-screen and it helps the movie.

Overall, I enjoyed this light hearted, silly comedy. After watching the film, I did a search for a potential sequel. Unfortunately, it looks like this franchise is dead for now. That’s really too bad. I would have loved to see Tatum and Hill join the Men In Black.

Movie Review: 21 Jump Street

Details: Released in 2012. Under two hours long. Stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

21 Jump Street is a movie based off the television show of the same name that aired decades ago. It was premised on undercover cops posing as youths to stop youth crime. The movie has the same concept.

Where the television show took itself very seriously, this film doesn’t. It’s a comedy that is very self-aware by how ridiculous the concept of adult cops posing as high school kids is and comes close to breaking the fourth wall in regards to Hollywood’s lack of creativity and love of remakes.

There were many jokes that fell flat for me, but there were just as many that worked. What was really surprising to me was the chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. The two work well with each other and have surprisingly hilarious chemistry. The rest of the cast is pretty good as well. There were also a good couple of cameos that surprised me.

Overall, it’s a fun, silly, self-aware movie where the only thing that this film has in common with the television show is the title.
