Anime Review: Restaurant to Another World

Details: Also known as Isekai Shokudō. Aired in 2017. Twelve episode with each episode at a little under twenty-five minutes.

Two of the most popular genres of anime right now are fantasy anime (Sword Art Online, Konosuba, Overlord, too many others to count) and gourmet/food anime (Shoukugeki no Soma being the most popular I think). Restaurant to Another World combines these two genres to create a lighthearted anime that was relaxing and fun watch.

Anime Review: Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul

Details: Also known as Shingeki no Bahamut. Aired in 2017. Technically the second season of Rage of Bahamut. Twenty-four episodes where each episode is around twenty-four minutes long.

The first season of Shingeki no Bahamut was some of the best animated, most visually pleasing shows I have ever seen. So when I learned about Virgin Soul, the second season of this show, I was more than ready for it. I am happy to report that like the first season, Virgin Soul is still as visually pleasing with a sometimes flawed, but mostly entertaining fantasy story.

Anime Review: Re:Zero – Starting Life In Another World

Details: First aired in 2016. Also known as Ri:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai SeikatsuThis is a review of episodes one through twenty-five, which is all existing episode at this time and there don’t seem to be any more coming in the near future. Each episode is about twenty-four minutes long. You can watch it on http://www.crunchyroll.com.

Ever since Sword Art Online, there have been a lot of anime’s where the protagonist is a young nerd from modern-day Japan who then gets reborn into a fantasy world and there are video game elements to that world and it’s usually a harem situation where he is surrounded by lots of cute girls. I originally watched a few minutes of this anime with that in mind and quit about ten minutes into the first episode. I thought it was boring and derivative.

Recently, I decided to give this show another try and forced myself to finish watching through the first episode. This was largely due to Re:Zero’s popularity as one of the most watched anime on crunchyroll.com. To my surprise, I got hooked. This is a great anime. In order to talk about why this show’s so good, there will be some spoilers ahead concerning the premise of the show. Otherwise, spoilers are minor and I won’t go into any plot developments or characters other than the protagonist, Subaru.

Anime Movie Review: Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale

Details: Released in 2017. Around two hours long.

I first watched the anime Sword Art Online as it was airing a very long time ago. I really liked as there were no other shows at the time quite like it. Since then, countless animes hoping to profit off the success of Sword Art Online have copied the general plot aspects of this show and turned it into a whole genre, drowning anime watchers in a sea of shows where the protagonist is transported/reborn into a fantasy world where they can level up as if in a video game. As someone watching this movie in this context, I can say that the movie was not great, with the best part of the movie being the after credits scene.

TV Show Review: Game of Thrones, Season 7

Details: Aired on HBO in 2017. Seven episode at around an hour each.

I’ve read and talked a lot about the new season since it aired. A lot of my opinions on the season are the same as many others. In short, I enjoyed the season, but the pacing was too fast and a lot of the elements of this show that made Game of Thrones unique were not present in this season. No spoilers ahead.

Anime Review: Saga of Tanya the Evil (also known as Yojo Senki)

Details: Aired in 2017. Twelve episodes at twenty-four minutes each in this first season. You can watch it on crunchyroll.com

Saga of Tanya the Evil is a fantasy war anime that centers on the character of Tanya von Degurechaff. It’s an entertaining concept that is animated well, paced well, and kept my attention.

Anime Review: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (also known as Kobayashi-san Chi no Meidoragon)

Details: Released in 2017. This is the first season so far. There are thirteen episodes with each episode around twenty-four minutes long. You can watch it on crunchyroll.com.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a slice of life anime with a twist. It’s similar to The Devil is a Part-Timer in that they take a down to earth idea and add the twist of fantasy. It’s a funny, fun anime with a lot of jokes and some fan service.

Anime Review: Attack on Titan (or Shinkgeki no Kyojin), Season 2

“Eren.”

The first season of Attack on Titans was one of the most popular, successful anime’s in recent memory. Season two succeeds in continuing the hype, the horror, and the violent gratification that started in season one. No spoilers as usual.

Comic Book Review: Reborn (2016)

Details: Six issue series. Published by Image Comics. Written by Mark Millar and drawn by Greg Capullo.

Greg Capullo and Mark Millar are comic book legends who have drawn and written some of my favorite comic book stories. With that said, Reborn is a short story that is okay, but not great.
