Food Truck Review: Metro Arepas

Details: I found the truck on 6th Avenue, between 50th Street and 51st Street, Manhattan, New York City. The official site is http://www.metroarepas-nyc.com/

I came here interested in some arepas, but I found the arepas were small, like a child’s fist. Additionally, this place specializes in arepas with other fillings, like meats and stuff. An arepa that has more than just bread costs around eight dollars, which I thought was idiotic for the cost of an arepa, so I got a Venezuelan hot dog instead for four dollars. To my disappointment, their Venezuelan hot dog was just a hot dog filled with ketchup, mustard, mayo, a few potato chips and a little cheese.

Overall, this place sucked shit.

Food Truck Review: Big D’s Grub Truck

Details: Found it on 6th Avenue, between 50th Street and 51st Street, in Manhattan, New York City. The official site is http://bigdsgrub.com/

Big D’s Grub Truck is a Asian fusion food truck that serves tacos, burrito bowls and sandwiches, but with Asian marinated meats. In other words, this is just another Asian style taco truck in a sea of Asian style taco truck.

I got the bulgogi “Grinder,” which is just a sandwich. It had the bulgogi/beef with pickled vegetables in it. It was okay. It cost around ten dollars. It kind of reminded of a bahn mi with bulgogi in it.

Overall, it was okay. It’s unlikely I’ll ever go back if I see the truck again.

Food Truck Review: Souvlaki GR

Details: I most recently found the truck near 50th Street and Sixth Avenue, New York City. It shows up at various places around the city. The official site is https://www.souvlakigr.com/

I’ve been here a number of times, but generally only because I lacked any real urge to eat anything else.

Food Cart Review: The Halal Guys

Details: There a number of carts here that are Halal Guys and a number that are imitators. The one cart that is undoubtedly a genuine Halal Guys cart is on the southwest corner of 6th Avenue and 53rd Street, New York, NY. The official site is http://thehalalguys.com/

A number of years ago I came here once under the pretense that this was the best halal cart in New York City. To my recollection, I paid around five dollars for what was arguably the best halal in the city, though not by a wide margin. Fast forward to the present day, and while I can say the food is about the same as it was the last time I had it, the price isn’t.

Restaurant Review: Korilla BBQ

Details: Located at 55th and Broadway, New York, NY 10019, among other locations. Official site is http://korillabbq.com/

I’ve been to the Korilla food truck a number of times now so I figure I should write a review. The Korilla food truck is pretty much the same concept as Chipotle and Indikitch, except with Korean flavors. I’ve been to the food truck a number of times, but I’ve never been to the brick and mortar location near St. Marks.

The food truck gives you two options: bowl or burrito. Like Chipotle, it’s the same ingredients, just different forms. You then choose your meat (bulgogi, pork, chicken, or tofu), rice (kim chee rice or sticky rice), cheese or pico de gallo, and a small assortment of pickled vegetables. You also get to choose a sauce. The truck moves around the city and you can track it on their twitter page (https://twitter.com/korillabbq). The price comes in at around $10, which is about Chipotle and Indikitch prices.

It’s pretty good eating and convenient for those of us working in the city. There is slightly less food here than at Chipotle or Indikitch, but it’s nice to get some Korean flavors in an area of the city with few Korean restaurants. Definitely convenient for those working in the city and tired of the restaurants in the surrounding area of your office. While I would avoid eating this on my days off, it is a nice thing to have for lunch on a work day.

If you want a recommendation on what to get, I usually get the spicy pork with kim chee rice, with everything, and with Korilla sauce (a kind of Chipotle mayonnaise). I don’t normally like spicy food, but this wasn’t too spicy.
