Restaurant Review: La Lotteria

Often times when I visit a Mexican restaurants that isn’t low-end or extremely high-end, I feel ripped off. Tacos are either overpriced, undersized, or both. It’s just a taco, one of the simplest, cheapest to make foods on the planet. When you start charging over three dollars for a taco or if you start shrinking them to teeny tiny serving sizes, you are generally fucking up tacos. The tacos at La Lotteria, though overpriced by this measure, are still better than most (maybe all) other middle range Mexican restaurants I’ve had in Manhattan.

Food Truck Review: Big D’s Grub Truck

Details: Found it on 6th Avenue, between 50th Street and 51st Street, in Manhattan, New York City. The official site is http://bigdsgrub.com/

Big D’s Grub Truck is a Asian fusion food truck that serves tacos, burrito bowls and sandwiches, but with Asian marinated meats. In other words, this is just another Asian style taco truck in a sea of Asian style taco truck.

I got the bulgogi “Grinder,” which is just a sandwich. It had the bulgogi/beef with pickled vegetables in it. It was okay. It cost around ten dollars. It kind of reminded of a bahn mi with bulgogi in it.

Overall, it was okay. It’s unlikely I’ll ever go back if I see the truck again.

Restaurant Review: Tacombi

Details: Located at 267 Elizabeth St, New York, NY 10012. The official site is http://tacombi.com/

Tacombi is another beer and taco place near in Manhattan. Like most taco place in Manhattan, the tacos are small and unsatisfying. Most tacos are somewhere from three to ten dollars. They have all the classic taco types.

I had the carnitas (around three dollars), Baja fish tacos (around six dollars), and a Horchatta (around four dollars). It was fine.

The biggest reason to come here is that the environment is comfortable and casual. Service was also really nice.

Overall, it was okay.

Restaurant Review: Homemade Taqueria

Details: Located at 40-10 Junction Blvd, Corona, NY 11368. Official site is https://www.homemadetaqueria.com/

A good place for cheap tacos. I had the bistec and the al pastor tacos. Most tacos cost around $2.50 to $3.00. Horchatta was pretty good. Very cinammon-y. Lady at the register was nice.

Restaurant Review: Tacuba Cantina Mexicana (Hell’s Kitchen, NYC)

Official site: http://www.tacubanyc.com/tacubahk

Came here dinner. The first and foremost thing to keep in mind is that the portions are tiny, especially considering the prices. The tacos were tiny and my carne asada was also pretty small. The gaucamole is okay, but it’s okay everywhere.

Score: 3.8/10 Spent a bunch of money for some of the smallest tacos I have ever seen. Never coming back. There are far too many restaurants that can do tacos and decent guacamole for less money and larger serving sizes. Drinks were all right.

Restaurant Review: La Palapa

Yelp site (official site was down when i checked): http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-palapa-new-york

I’ve been here a few times. It’s generally all right.

We had the guacamole and chips, tacos, a salad, enchiladas, the mole duck, and the bistec.

Everything was fine. I don’t recommend the duck. The frozen margarita machine was broken when we visited most recently. Most unfortunate.

Service was nice. We have a strict vegan and they did their best to accommodate.

Environment was all right.

Score: 5/10 Just your average Mexican place. Best part about this place is its location in St. Mark’s.

Restaurant Review: Tanner Smith’s (55th Street, NYC)

Tanner Smith’s is a relatively new bar that opened this year. I came here for drinks after work.

First is the appearance. It’s a nice looking bar and I really like the classical look.

Like many bars, they have a variety of “special drinks,” which are really just your average drinks with their slightly different twist on them. Had some beers; they have all your standard brands. Also tried the Winona. It’s their twist on the old fashioned and I really liked it. It came in a bottle and there was some instruction on how to drink it. I just emptied the bottle into the iced glass. It had a smoky taste which differentiated it from other old fashioned’s I’ve had before.

Other people ordered dirty martinis and the Mayor Gaynor’s Tippler (their version of a Manhattan). I was told they were both good.

We ordered a lot of food; the Thai deviled eggs on curried toast, house prepared beef jerky, the everything pretzel, the buffalo chicken spring rolls, the chicken wings (Asian sesame sauce), some beef burgers, tacos pequenos and a flat bread pizza.

Everything was really good. The Thai deviled eggs were really small. Tacos were ordinary. The chicken wings with asian sesame sauce were amazing and came with a cucumber salad. Burgers and pizza were fine.

I don’t know if it was because they were new, but the service wasn’t fantastic. People were nice, they just weren’t that reliable.

Score: 7.5/10 Really like this place. It’s got a nice vibe and the people coming here were fun. Drinks were great and I really liked my Winona. Chicken wings were also great. I heard that the Sriracha Honey flavored wings were also good. Looking forward to coming here again.
